Celebration Day

I can't believe the week is over! We've built a shake table, a structure to hold a pig above the ground away from danger, composed building codes, created safe, strong and beautiful structures that withstand large magnitude earthquakes without slipping and sheering! It's been a productive week!

Tomorrow we celebrate our learning with an open house for parents. The celebration begins at 10, but students still need to arrive at 9.

I've sent an email about a new video from our work on Wednesday. Check it out, the students are amazing!

Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On!

Today we built our shake tables, learned about the Richter scale, and learned that houses have skeletons. The skeletons are the framework for the house. We tested our shake tables with a variety of objects, and a variety of building skeletons.

A compilation video has been posted for your viewing only on my private youtube account. You can access it here: http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&feature=vm-privacy&video_id=FcFAAqz4XrU

Day One!

What is technology? Is it a spider web? Dog food? Or just things having that are electronic? These are questions we discussed today.

We also met the "duo" two workers in Haiti who will give us our daily challenges via mp3 message.

We finished the day with a challenge--can we build a tower that will hold our beany baby pig, called Bacon, at least 6 to 10 inches from the base of the table. Most students were VERY successful.

Comments I heard today during the build: "We didn't fully plan it out." "We need to restart because this isn't working." "We need to test, and retest." "Maybe we should test along the way."

Here are photos from the day.
